Kew gardens (Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway)
6th December
" Kews Rhizotron and xstrata Treetop walkway takes you under the ground and then 18m (59ft) up in the air, bringing you close to trees in a way that will take your breath away." (www.apps.kew.org/trees/)
After visiting the Palm house we went to see the elevated walkway. It felt very tall and very wobbly but the view of the trees was quite a unique viewpoint to have, however i found that the trees should have been better labled, maybe some information about the species or some intersting facts; i found that a lot of the time i didn't really know what i was looking at. It was an interesting feature and i am glad i went to see it, but i just felt there should have been more; the focus was supposedly the trees, but i found it difficult to focus on them because there was nothing to inspire you, some form of knowledge would definately be beneficial to anyone looking around up there. the way the structure swayed was quite effective as the trees were swaying too. And the use of cor-ten steel in the construction of the structure was sympathetic to the surroundings and the texture of it almost reflected the rough texture of the bark of the trees. The structure looked quite incredible from the ground.
